Day 1 Lisbon
I arrived in Lisbon with a half day left after flying all night, so I used this time to wander around and check a few things out— basically forcing myself to stay awake and adjust to the time difference!
After checking in to my hotel, I headed out with the map they gave me to explore, map you ask? Why yes, because I left my phone on the plane, goodbye forever! Unexpected unplugged vacay!
My first stop was Convento do Carmo. A midieval convent built in the 14th century that was ruined by an earthquake that struck Lisbon in 1755. The ruins are beautiful and they have turned it into an open air museum! There are some eclectic things in the collection, such as Peruvian mummies and an expansive library history of the countries of the world at the time. This was an easy walk from my hotel and great for a quick afternoon trip! The fee to get in was 4,00€ and they do take card if you have no cash! In fact all the parks and monuments that I visited on this trip took card if you did not have any cash. I still recommend carrying cash for local vendors or cabs.
The architecture was just beautiful and the open blue sky from the collapsed ceiling adds to the grandeur of the cathedral! Did you know Lisbon on average has 300 sunny days per year?! The weather was literally perfect my whole trip, a nice reprieve from the summer heat of NYC.
The best part was just wandering around and admiring all the colorful buildings, charming plazas, and getting aquatinted with the city!
Lisbon is full of charm from the hills, the trams from days gone by, and of course the gorgeous colorful tile walls!
It's also known as the city of 7 hills, so if you're willing to do some walking there are some really spectacular views!
